Diabetic Feet

Diabetes can have a devastating effect on the feet, causing over 80,000 lower extremity amputations every year. Sadly, the majority of these can be easily prevented by doing a daily self exam and scheduling routine visits to the podiatrist.

At the Diabetic Foot Center at FAA, Dr. Marco A. Vargas has developed a comprehensive program for diabetic patients specializing in the treatment and prevention of diabetic foot complications. Since diabetic foot infections can require many different tests and treatments, the Diabetic Foot Center was designed so that our patients can conveniently undergo the treatments and tests necessary in one location without having to travel to other facilities and waste valuable time when the need arises. At our center we offer nerve and vascular testing, muscle testing, digital x-rays, musculoskeletal ultrasound, wound care, routine foot care and treatments for peripheral neuropathy. We also dispense custom shoes and inserts covered under the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe program along with most of the products Dr. Vargas recommends to his patients. This makes it easy for patients to follow our recommendations and the Diabetic Foot Center is able to ensure that our patients are receiving the highest quality care and products.

The Diabetic Foot Center at FAA Features

  • Patient education programs that emphasize proper home foot care to decrease the likelihood of diabetic complications such as infection, ulcerations, peripheral vascular disease and amputations.
  • Expertise in reconstructive foot surgery procedures in diabetic patients with a goal of limb preservation and restoring a functional lower extremity.
  • Surgical expertise in reconstructive surgery of the unstable, chronically ulcerated Charcot foot.
  • Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Exam (CDFE) - Done routinely at intervals guided by the patient's overall foot health, this exam helps to assess nerve and vascular health along with any pressure points on the foot that may be precursors to ulceration. By preventing ulcerations, amputation rates drop dramatically.
  • VST MyoDynamic Device - used in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy to restore proper nerve function in diabetic patients. This device has been scientifically proven to reduce the symptoms and effects of neuropathy.
  • Digital X-rays
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
  • State-of-the-art wound healing modalities such as vacuum-assisted closure, living skin equivalents and topical growth factors.
  • State-of-the-art facility dedicated exclusively to the manufacturing of custom foot orthotics designed to control abnormal biomechanical forces that contribute to foot and ankle injuries. Made on site, all of our orthotics are guaranteed with free lifetime accommodations for our patients.
